A few days ago, I was telling [profile] kadymae about this fascinating article about David Tran, the Vietnam immigrant who created sriracha hot sauce.

The equally fascinating McIlhenny family of Tabasco sauce fame was mentioned in the article. I was impressed that McIlhenny's was still a family-run business after six generations.[profile] kadymae told me other interesting things about the family, such as their interests in oil and salt. (Here's a 2007 NYT article about the family business.)

Today, [personal profile] kendallmckenna linked to the sad news that the current McIlhenny CEO, Paul, had died on Saturday. Add to the list of interesting McIlhenny trivia: Paul was a marine who survived a samurai sword blow to the head, and the helmet to prove it is in the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.
