That's a really good point. I don't write a lot of fiction, but I have noticed that even writing meta, I often start describing scenes in present tense, only to subconsciously switch to past tense later on. It drives proofers nuts! But the first pass, I'm just trying to get the content out, and the tense does what it wants.
