DC Comics: From Page to WTF?
Jan. 23rd, 2011 03:05 pmThis past week brought news of two live-action DC Comics productions.
The first was an announcement that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle and that Tom Hardy has been cast as Bane in the next Nolan Batman film. I like both actors, but I'm about 50% on board with the Hathaway decision and 25% on Hardy. In the former case, it looks like we won't get Catwoman (so 1/4 mark off); although I can see where they might want to keep Kyle as more of a pulp comics femme fatale in keeping with the movies' noir aesthetic, Hathaway seems about 10 years too young to give Bale's Wayne a run for his money (hence, the other 1/4 mark off). Why o why did they dispose of Maggie Gyllenhaal? In the latter case, Bane is a giant Latino, Hardy is not (50% off on those points); and as bulked up as Hardy can get, I'm having a tough time picturing him as a homicidal maniac capable of breaking Bale's back with his bare hands. Even if Hardy wears a Mexican wrestling mask, I'll know it'll be him under there!
The second bit of WTFery from the DC camp was news that NBC greenlit a David E. Kelley Wonder Woman series for TV. But get this: it's a "revisioning" that has Diana as a CEO and crimefighter on the side. Er, how is that Wonder Woman? It sounds more like a lame Ally McBeal fantasy. Besides, it's ironic that this comes from the man who married the ultimate movie Catwoman, Michelle Pffeiffer: that was a character whose transition to the screen was inspired by the comics, but much elaborated upon, and fed back into the comics. (The current Catwoman wears a costume that still owes itself to Pfeiffer's, though with a substantial Trinity-from-Matrix update.) I doubt this series will get very far, because who wants to see an ersatz Wonder Woman?
After all this grim news, I was delighted to see
beatonna's latest send-up: The Adventures of Sexy Batman. Assless Bat-chaps? Now, this is a revisioning I can live with!
