Flash Forward Fysics

[livejournal.com profile] dewline asked if the physics on the show Flash Forward hold up. In the last ep, they revealed that the "MLap" accelerated generated energies in the area of a quadrillion electron volts.

So given that the LHC is designed to produce collisions at 14 TeV (14 trillion electron volts, I believe), how huge of a generator would be required to generate a quadrillion ev (not sure how to express that in short form) collision?

My suspicion is that the technology, infrastructure and utilities required for that kind of energy would make it very difficult to recreate on a supersekret basis, as the bad guys on Flash Forward seem to want to do.

Oh, and I suspect that it would cause a blackout because of the energy drain, but not necessarily a massive blackout of human consciousness. Yet electronics, including security cameras and the electronic signs in the baseball stadium were still working.

And the little mood ring that disrupts the effect of the wave of energy: that's just got to be magic. Or augmented by tinfoil that he hid under his toque.

I have my suspicions that Flosso's backers were simply piggy-backing their own project on whatever it is that NLAP was doing, without Simcoe and company's knowledge. Once they knew that Simcoe's experiment was going ahead, that is.

The "mood ring" was called a "Quantum entanglement device" (QED).

One thing we can probably now count on: Since original novel-writer Rob Sawyer's been in the writers' room on an irregular basis and keeps in touch with the Los Angeles crew otherwise on a regular basis, I suspect we will see more consistent physics than might usually be the case with SFTV.
