I think you have a point there with the beginning of things. I was fascinated with Death being there to reap God. I thought that was a clear indication that God is not the Final Authority (I'm capitalizing Everything now), although I think it also neatly avoids having to answer what might be, if anything. So while God may have created the Pagan Gods, some other force might have been involved in that as well. I actually like the way they kept it open, while also staying true to the show's mandate that stories that we tell to explain the inexplicable are all true.
