That's a good point that the remark lets us "hear" how that person reads.
I remember being told in school that the less apparent the author, the more skillful/better the work. I don't know if it was just that person's bias or if it was a "phase" schools went through.
Either way, I can see people having personal preferences that way, but it's not something I'd expect anyone to be so dogmatic about!
