Today is Jared Padalecki's birthday, so it was entirely appropriate that tonight's episode of Gilmore Girls was Dean-heavy.

On his way to the conclusion that Rory likes Jess, Dean spent the entire episode pining for Rory and tossing puppy dog eyes at Lorelei looking for reassurance.

Of course, it was hard not to feel for him, but the episode made clear that Dean is probably too much like Rory's grandfather, Richard, for her (or his) own good. They both act from no nonsense, traditional American values and strive to do what's appropriate, even if it means putting aside some of their own desires. (They also both have a thing for rebuilding classic cars, which unfortunately reminded me of the body shop and muscle car photo sessions Jared's done; I think I might have missed parts of the episode!) Richard discovers that he hates being retired. For possibly the first time in 35 years, he realizes that there's a gap between what's expected of him and what he actually feels.

Richard's story ends in jubilation (and relief for his wife, Emily, who was tired of Richard moping around the house), while the Dean's ends in heartbreak (and sympathy from Lorelei, who felt heartbroken about seeing Dean mope around her house). In the same episode, we discover that Michel gets along so well with his mother because they never talk about anything of consequence. Meanwhile, Lorelei and Emily are constantly fighting because they do talk about very foundational issues. The take-away from all these stories is that it's better to face the truth than to go on pretending, even if the truth hurts.

Okay, maybe not the least obvious message ever, but told quite well, and with different spins on the theme. This was a case of the show earning its reputation as a great cross-generational conversation-starter.

Thanks for that picspam link. :D Very, very nice.

I haven't seen Gilmore Girls - at least, very little of it - but I don't really plan on it, so I read your whole post anyway. Sounds like an interesting episode.

Thanks for reading! I can get into the plots and describe the characters on GG a little more if things get interesting!

I liked that picspam, too, especially where she mused about which Jared she liked. Coincidentally, I recently saw an ad for State Farm where an agent changed depending on what a group of young women wanted in a guy. First, there was a hot dude, then a sensitive guy, then a bad boy. I thought, if you added a nerd, you could have them all in Sam WInchester!

Yeah, GG is one of those shows that's just so long and not really the kind of thing I want to spend that much time on, so I'm not likely to ever take the time/trouble to watch it, but at the same time, I am interested in the characters, and there are some very pretty people in it, and if you write more about it, I will read it. ^_^

Maaaan, I like all the Jareds. :P Oh, Sam Winchester. What was it, a mystery wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a taco? I really like Jared best when he's interacting with people he cares about, though. The wedding photos, for example, or the Rising Con Jared&Jensen panel. (WHO WAS THAT BOWLEGGED STRANGER AND WHAT DID HE DO WITH JENSEN? XD)

This is awesome! I've wanted to write more about GG, and now I has an audience! (Any number over 0 is highly appreciated!)

Jared did that Rising Con panel with someone I like to think of as Big Red. We all know the guys have stunt doubles on the show. So is Big Red Jensen's con double?!

Splendid. :D

That's awesome. XD I don't know what it was about Spain, but dude. Jared dancing? Not really a surprise. Jensen dancing? O_o Oh, and the earlier con when he voluntarily performed a song by himself?? Yeah, I'm almost inclined to believe he's got a con double.
